Sat., 10 a.m. 1 p.m.Sun.) speaks flawless English and is full of adventurous options for the Huancayo area. He rents mountain bikes ($8 half-day, $15 full day) and hands out free walking and biking maps to those who rent bikes or stay in the Casa de la Abuela, the hostel across the street, run by his mom. The walks include the lake-to-lake circuit near Jauja and loop above Huancayo; ruins and hot mineral baths at Matachico, north of Jauja; a ridge walk between the villages of Ahuac and Chupaca that passes through a line of Huanca granaries and offers views of the snow-covered Cordillera Huaytapallana and Lago Ñahuimpuquio; a walk from the village of San Jerónimo to the Ingenio trout farm and then back to Concepción; and a walk between the artisan towns of Hualhuas and San Jerónimo. Lucho is well-connected among the artisans in the valley and offers a great crafts tour to shops in several villages for $35 pp, including lunch and guide. He also offers archaeology tours of the valley and leads three- to five-day treks to out-of the-way places, including a trek along an old llama trail that threads 4,400-meter passes in the Cordillera Huaytapallana. He knows the jungle around Chanchamayo well and takes travelers out to his father's ranch on the way to Pozuzo, a great chance to see how locals live and do some rough-and-tumble exploring. Lucho is a gifted teacher who helps people understand their surroundings.
