With a population of 350,000, and the capital of the Junin Department, Huancayo is a lively commercial center of Peru creating a meeting place for people of the jungle, the mountains and the coast. In the heart of the Peruvian Andes, at 3240m above sea level, this fascinating city is a 6-hour bus ride from Lima - a unique experience when crossing a breath-taking pass of 4817m.

A big attraction in Huancayo is "Feria Dominical," or the Sunday Market, where local producers show the best of their work. Also impressive is the daily market, which has been reported by travelers as being one of the most interesting in the world. A dedicated fiesta city, people flock from far and wide to attend Huancayo's important festivals, which incorporate an incredible range of traditional food, crafts, dancing and lively music.

From Huancayo you can organize mountain bike or horse to explore the surrounding circuits of the Mantaro Valley - discovering crafts of all kinds and local agricultural activities such as farming and cattle and llama herding.

It is possible to continue your journey through Peru from Huancayo, by taking a bus or train to Huancavelica, or a bus to Ayacucho, Jauja, Tarma, and to the central jungle towns of La Merced and Satipo.
